April Grant is famed for ballads, sea music,
and a broad repertoire of poems and folktales.
A mainstay of singing circles in the Boston area,
she has appeared at the Mystic Sea Music Festival,
the Portsmouth Maritime Festival, the late, great NOMAD festival, and the New England Folk Festival.
She has told stories and sung songs everywhere from
the Fire & Water Cafe (Northampton, MA)
to the Glenfarg Folk Club (Scotland)
and The Story Space (Central Square, Cambridge).
My first public performance as a storyteller was on a beach in Nickerson State Park on Cape Cod, at age six, to a group of other little kids and a park ranger. I can still see the bonfire flames and the sparks showering past my cotton dress, and hear my own voice reciting "The Coffin," as my audience listened in a fearful silence. I've had good settings since then, but nothing as close to perfect as that.
